Additional Observances and Notable Exclusions
The notification clarifies an important administrative
point: festivals or occasions that naturally fall on a Sunday or the second
Saturday of a month are excluded from the main public holiday list, as these
days are already designated as closed holidays.
However, several significant observances fall on these
pre-existing closed days. While they are not counted as additional public
holidays, they are officially recognized in the gazette for the year 2027.
These include:
- Easter:
Sunday, 28 March 2027
- Milad-i-Sherif
(Birthday of Prophet Muhammed): Second Saturday, 14 August 2027
- Independence
Day: Sunday, 15 August 2027
- First
Onam: Second Saturday, 11 September 2027
- Thiruvonam:
Sunday, 12 September 2027
- Mahanavami:
Second Saturday, 9 October 2027
- Vijayadasami:
Sunday, 10 October 2027
Restricted Holidays
The Kerala government also provides for specific restricted
holidays, allowing employees belonging to certain communities to avail of leave
on days of cultural or religious significance, subject to administrative
approval. For 2027, the following restricted holidays are notified:
- Ayya
Vaikunda Swami Jayanthi: 4 March 2027 (Thursday). This is permitted
for Government, Quasi-Government, and Public Sector Undertaking employees
and teachers belonging to the Nadar community.
- Avani
Avittam: 17 August 2027 (Tuesday). This is permitted for Government
employees belonging to the Brahmin community.
- Vishwakarma
Day: 17 September 2027 (Friday). This is permitted for Government,
Quasi-Government, and Public Sector Undertaking employees and teachers
belonging to the Vishwakarma community.
Special Instruction for New Delhi Offices
The gazette includes a specific directive for state
government employees working outside Kerala. According to the notification, 23
March 2027 (Tuesday) shall be observed as a holiday for all State Government
offices, including Public Sector Undertakings functioning in New Delhi, on
account of Holi.
